7 Tips to Prep Your Home For Summer

The warm spring and summer weather just MIGHT be upon us here in Southeast Wisconsin!  Don’t let a poorly functioning air conditioner spoil the warm weather for you!  Even though, you’ve waited through 3 seasons for the heat, you will want to escape the heat at some point. These 7 tips will help you prepare your HVAC system for a Wisconsin summer.  Four of which you can do yourself!

Schedule a Seasonal Tune-Up

This tip is as simple as making a phone call to Ahrens Heating & Cooling (262-353-9123) to schedule a preventive maintenance appointment. Your system will run more efficiently this spring and summer and will be less likely to break down on a hot summer day.

Air Filter

No need to call a professional for this easy task. Simply purchase a new air filter and replace the current one. Your air quality and efficiency will be improved by this simple step. Be sure to check your air filter every thirty days during summer use and replace it when needed.

Outside Unit

Check your outside air conditioning unit.  Be sure there are no weeds, flowers, shrubs or debris within 12 inches of the unit. Never, ever put anything on top of your unit during the cooling season! An a/c unit needs to breathe to work to its full capacity.  Checking it every time you mow the lawn is a good habit to get into.

Thermostat Batteries

At Ahrens Heating & Cooling we recommend that you change your thermostat batteries at the same time you replace your smoke detector batteries at daylight saving time (spring ahead, fall back – second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November annually).  This is a good habit to get into to ensure your batteries are in good working order.

A Programmable Thermostat

If you do not have a programmable thermostat, have one installed this spring. You will enjoy better control of the temperature in your home, and possibly lower energy bills since you can set the temperature so that your system runs less when you are not there.

Ductwork

If your ductwork is dirty and full of debris, the airflow is compromised.  In addition, any dirt and debris in your ductwork will find its way back into your living space and then back into your ductwork like a vicious cycle of recycled and whirl pooling dirt, dust, debris, dead skin, pet dander, smoke odor, and even rotting insect or rodent carcasses!  One call to Ahrens Heating & Cooling (262-353-9123) for a duct cleaning can put you on our books for a cleaner home and fresher smelling indoor air!

Consider an Upgrade

If your system limped through the last cooling season don’t wait for issue to come up, spring is a great time to have a new air conditioning system installed by Ahrens Heating & Cooling (262-353-9123). Treat yourself to a new, trouble-free I, efficient system this spring! A new, efficient system should save you money on your heating and cooling bills.
